IN LOVING VOICE

Through it all, Onaje has emerged to endeavor to speak “in loving voice” and hear in loving hearing…

Raised in extended family, so poor that “dirt road and outhouse” were literal, evicted off his land as a child by the use of eminent domain in Closter, New Jersey  (1959); raised by a alcoholic father, who died of cancer in 1983; as a youth experienced the fear of near death and  having to talk down a fellow urban ghetto dweller from shooting him in the face for no apparent reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time in front of a powerless,  oppressed young black man; coupled with the experience of dealing with the death of his oldest daughter who committed suicide at the age of 25; and the most recent experience of having to bury his youngest sister, Leslie Oliver, who was murdered in January 2006 in New York City, Onaje Muid has walked a life of many ups and downs.

His daughter’s death might have had the most devastating and lasting effect. It took at least two years to say “ suicide” and nearly eight years to talk  about it in public. The transition from holding the pain inside as a poison to creating a DVD about celebrating Taisha’s life happened in 2006 (visit www.storycenter.org).

Despite the hardships which were part and parcel of oppression and the legacy of historical trauma, there were many joys and incredible realities shared by him, his family, friends and other “wounded healers” throughout the landscape of Turtle Island (The North American continent).

It was the reflection of his experiences on his path of healing from historical trauma that he created the seven challenges of healing historical trauma as explained later on this site. He now walks the path of a wounded healer attempting to live out, “ i am healing, you are healing, we are healing, our world is healing…

His vision is to see a world where “Maat”, order, balance, harmony and reciprocity are  fully realized and people will know and live  out MITAKUYE OYASIN/we are all related because Ubuntu (I am because we are) finds its full expression.

“A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.”          Archbishop Desmond Tutu
